MOUNT VERNON — A 23-year-old man is in the Knox County Jail after a shooting incident Saturday afternoon on the city’s west side.
According to an MVPD release, officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 200 block of Greenwood Avenue around 2:30 p.m.
When they arrived at the scene, officers found an adult female victim suffering from what is believed to be a single gunshot wound.
Under the provisions of Ohio’s Marsy’s Law, the MVPD will not release the victim’s identification at this time.
Mount Vernon Emergency Medical Services were called to the location. The individual was treated at the scene and transported to Knox Community Hospital.
MVPD detectives also responded to the location. During the initial investigation, officers detained a single male suspect, 23-year-old Leroy E. King.
Initial reports were that the suspect was at-large in the community. Knox Community Hospital placed its facility on lockdown as a precaution.
However, this information was incorrect. According to the MVPD, officers detained the sole suspect at the scene immediately upon their arrival.
Leroy E. King was arrested and initially charged with “improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation.”
He was transported to the Knox County Jail without incident and is now being held without bond.
This incident is still under investigation and further charges may be forthcoming. Updates will be released as they become available.
