Carolyn Edith Hyslop took her last breath on September 23, 2024 at Danbury Senior
Living in Mount Vernon. She was born July 8, 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to
Edgar and Bessie (Fearman) Hyslop. Carolyn spent her childhood on the family farm in
Caledonia, Ontario. After graduating from Hamilton Nursing School in 1958, she and
some nurse friends went to work in Bermuda where she met her future husband and father
to her three sons, Wally Wilson of Kentucky, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. She
left the family farm and came to the United States in 1961 and eventually became a U.S.
citizen. Giving birth to three boys in three years, Carolyn and Wally moved frequently and
finally took root in Valley City, Ohio. She was determined and smart and had a love of
nursing and learning, so continued her education and eventually became a Certified Nurse
Practitioner at the age of 52; this done while still running a household, working part time,
and raising three rambunctious boys. Once those boys were grown, Carolyn uprooted her
self once again and worked for a time in Missouri and West Virginia, desiring to bring her
skills to under served areas. She received further certification as a nurse practioner in
Family Medicine from the U. of Missouri and wound up her career working with veterans
at the V.A. Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio for 14 years, finally retiring at the age of 77.
A hard worker, Carolyn enjoyed her vacation times. However, she never could understand
lazing around on her off time and—being curious of other peoples and cultures—instead
chose world travel to interesting and exotic locations such as Thailand, Peru, Kenya, and
China, winding up her great adventures with a trip to “the bottom of the ball” as she would
say, Antarctica. She was an accomplished pianist and painter. She loved the beauty of
nature and was a bird watcher. In her last years, she would remark each spring, “I have
never seen a prettier one than this year’s!” The fruits of her labor spilled over in the
generosity she showed to her children and grandchildren in gifts and trips.

In her final decade, Carolyn was diagnosed with mixed dementia–vascular and
Alzheimer’s Disease. She moved to a very friendly neighborhood in Fredericktown to be
near her eldest son and his family and lived independently until the last 15 months of her
life when she was moved into Danbury Senior Living. There, through the final struggles
and confusion of her disease, she found kind and competent care. The family will always
be grateful to her good neighbors of Susan Street and her sympathetic caregivers at
Danbury.

Carolyn is survived by her older sister, Mary Oakley—who was often on her mind in her
last years— and sister-in-law Dayle (Hugh) Hyslop, both of Ontario, Canada. She is also
survived by her Wilson boys, Brady (Becky), Doug (Bing), and Charlie as well as
grandchildren, Brady (Sarah) Wilson, Alexandra Wilson, Richard Wilson, Isabelle Wilson,
Melissa (Mike) Hicks, Jessie Lanuevo, and Emilee (Suvir) Wilson—who followed
Grandma into the nursing profession—and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers George (Sue) Hyslop and beloved Hugh (Dayle) Hyslop.

Her family prays that after a lifetime of wandering, Carolyn has found her eternal rest in
the arms of her Heavenly father.

The family will have a time of gathering from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, September

30, 2024 at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Dowds Chapel 201 Newark Rd., Mount
Vernon. A family graveside service will follow at the Kokosing Nature Preserve in
Gambier.
