MOUNT VERNON — Grab your dinglehoppers and get ready to dive under the sea.
“Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.” from MTVArts is flipping its fins onto the stage, bringing all the magic, music, and mischievous sea creatures you know and love — with a splash of junior charm that’s sure to make waves.
The show is part of its 2024 Youth Enrichment Series (YES!). Nearly 40 cast members are part of the performance at Knox Memorial Theater on Sept. 13 to 15.
The cast members include six puppeteers needed to hoist the sea witch Ursula’s tentacles.
For the uninitiated, “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.” takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above.
But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking, according to MTVArts.
Costume leads were Mary Harris and Leah Miller, with assistants from Susan Brown, Janet Stutzman, Kristen VanValkenburg, and Tish Roginski.
Maya McDonald was Ariel in the 2014 production.
The production is special to MTVArts artistic director Bruce Jacklin, with Arts IQ.
“There’s more spectacle [for this production,]” Jacklin said.
In the past decade, further detail has been added to costumes and set pieces.
Karma Carpenter, who portrays Ursula, believes she has the “big personality” needed to be the wicked sea witch.
Stage manager Serra Barrett said the production window for “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.” is six weeks, giving cast and staff a short turnaround time to put a production on stage.
“It’s very limited,” Barrett said.
Further details on the show as well as purchasing tickets can be found here.
Correction: McDonald was Ariel in the 2014 production, not a costume lead.
