MOUNT VERNON — The Lucy Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invites area students to participate in its 2024-2025 American History Essay Contest.

Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 in public, private, or parochial schools are eligible. Homeschooled students are also eligible.

The essay’s title is “Enjoying a New Kind of Tea Party.”

The student is to imagine living in the 1770s. There was a protest movement from the colonists against the British due to taxes and laws.

Along the East Coast, a growing number of patriots held “tea” parties. Students are to write about the tea parties and say why they would choose to join them.

Entries for grade five must be 300 to 600 words; for grades six, seven, and eight, entries must be 600-1,000. All American history essays must be the student’s original work and include a title page with specific information and a bibliography.

The contest deadline is Oct. 5, 2024. One essay at each grade level will be selected as the chapter winner, and the essay will be forwarded to the next level in the state competition.

For additional information, students should contact any fifth- through eighth-grade Language Arts or Social Studies teacher at their school.
