Ronald “Ron” Edward McMillen, 84, of Mount Vernon passed away Monday, August 19, 2024 at Knox Community Hospital following a courageous battle with declining health. He was born November 14, 1939, in Mount Vernon to the late John and Ruth (Carter) McMillen.

Ron honorably served his country in the Army from 1960 to 1963 in Germany and he spent his leave time traveling the world. After returning from the service Ron attended the Columbus Business College and went to work for Cooper Energy Service where he retired with 39 years of service. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. Ron enjoyed woodworking, tending to his yard and the church yard, and especially loved attending his grandchildren’s events. In his youth, Ron was part of the first Babe Ruth Baseball team in Mount Vernon and in retirement he played on the Old Timers Softball League.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Catherine “Cathy” (Shipley) McMillen, whom he married on October 16, 1966; his children, Jacque (Dave) Smith of Mount Vernon, Gwen (John) Hartz of Mount Vernon, and Chris (Amanda) McMillen of Howard; grandchildren, Britney, Brandon, Jake, Levi, Caleb, Kensley and Kaicen; his brother, Ken McMillen of Merritt Island, FL; and special family members, Donnie (Becky) Ramey of Centerburg.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the time of a memorial service celebrating the life of Ron at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the First Baptist Church, 303 South Edgewood Rd., Mount Vernon with Pastor Bill Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Saint John Cemetery near Mount Vernon with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
