GAMBIER — Ohio 229/308 roundabout project is scheduled to begin construction today, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

This project includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of the Ohio 229/308 intersection and Laymon Road.

A shared use pathway along Ohio 308 between Ohio 239, and Ward Street within Gambier is also included within the project.

The estimated completion is November, according to ODOT.

A map shared by Gambier Mayor Leeman Kessler shows red representing inaccessible areas, yellow showing routes for local traffic and green showcasing permitted detours for traffic. ODOT’s detour has motorists traveling Ohio 13 to U.S. 36 to U.S. 62.

ODOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HISP) is funding the project. The primary objective, according to ODOT, is to reduce fatal and injury crashes.

“After multiple coordination meetings with local agencies, a roundabout was chosen as a preferred countermeasure after a trial of various low-cost countermeasures,” Kessler said at an April public meeting. “A funding request for a roundabout was considered and approved by the HSIP committee.”
