MOUNT VERNON — Questions about sea monsters, narcolepsy and searching for donuts in a trash can were asked in Dan Emmett’s inaugural Book Bonanza on Tuesday.
Students interested in participating in the book reading competition were asked to read several books in which they’d be asked questions between two teams. Questions revolved around a plot point in a book; students answering with the title and author. The team that correctly answered more questions won the competition.
The two teams: The Buckeyes and The Book Warriors went back and forth, congratulating one another when they answered correctly.

After nearly an hour of questions, The Book Warriors came out on top, smiling and waving their arms in excitement.
Students started preparing for the competition at the end of February into early March, Principal Margy Arck said. They met once a week after school to prepare like answering practice questions. Once spring break ended, students met twice a week.
Students choose what books to read for the Book Bonanza, Dan Emmett aide Susan Hurley said, along with books teachers read in class.
The Book Bonanza sparked critical thinking and teamwork skills, relying on teammates to work together to solve questions.
Interest for next year’s book reading competition has already begun, Hurley added. Time to start flipping through pages.
