MOUNT VERNON — The city of Mount Vernon has initiated a public review of its proposed zoning code revisions, which were informed by a comprehensive growth strategy for the city.

The first major update to the city’s zoning code since the 1990s is now available for public review online. It was scheduled to be presented to the Municipal Planning Commission for formal review at its meeting on Thursday, May 9.

The city initiated a planning, zoning, and subdivision regulation modernization project in late 2022 to accommodate projected economic growth while also ensuring that the city’s infrastructure and natural resources are compatible with the goal of sustainable development.

The project’s objectives include: implementing the city’s comprehensive plan, encouraging orderly, efficient, and appropriate growth, and facilitating development of land uses according to a comprehensive design that ensures adequate traffic capacity, water and sewer service, schools, and public parklands.

The revised zoning code’s provisions include requirements for developers to submit detailed plans for projects, setbacks for property owners, and provisions for the protection of historic properties.

The public is invited to review and comment on the proposed revisions online or via email until noon on May 31, 2024.

A special meeting of the Municipal Planning Commission on Thursday, June 6, 2024, will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall to review the zoning code revisions and discuss comments from residents.
