MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Nazarene University welcomed its eighth president on Wednesday.
With light beaming from the stained colored glass windows inside the R.R. Hodges Capel, MVNU faculty and students gathered for the induction of Dr. Carson D. Castleman.
Castleman was first elected as president on Aug. 11, 2023, officially beginning his tenure on Oct. 1, 2023.
Castleman has a long tenure at MVNU, beginning his career at the admissions office. He then was hired as the director of university advancement.
His wife, Dr. Angela Castleman, is a 2000 alumna of MVNU. She’s also served as an MVNU board of trustees member for over five years.
Standing at the pulpit, wearing a green inauguration gown, Castleman thanked his mother for the wisdom she bestowed upon him.
“I wish she could be here today just to be a part of this beautiful ceremony,” Castleman said, holding back tears. “My mother had a deep faith and relied on Christ at every turn.
“And she made sure each of us kids knew where our health came from and we know beyond a shadow of a doubt where her trust was and it was not in this world, it was not in any human, but it was in her savior Jesus Christ.”
Castleman paused.
“I give honor to her and thank God for a mother who loved me, cared for me, instructed me to put my faith and my trust in Jesus Christ,” Castleman said. “Since my mother cannot be here today to celebrate with me, I am honored to have her two sisters with me.
“These ladies have played an essential part in my life. Both have modeled what it means to be prayer warriors, faithful and fruitful leaders in the church and some of my greatest cheerleaders. Thank you both for living a life and modeling to our entire family.”
Castleman thanked MVNU Foundation Partner Dr. Gregory Sizemore, who shared a vital role in Castleman’s early years of development.
“Since I was 12 years old, he’s been investing in me and caring for me and always pointing me and helping me develop my faith in Jesus Christ,” Castleman said. “Greg, I could never repay you for all you’ve done for me, so today I pause and honor you for who you are and the love you have shown me through the years you have been Jesus to me in the flesh.
“Thank you, my dear friend.”
When Castleman didn’t believe in himself, Angela was by his side.
“You have always been by my side and willing to go wherever the Lord has called us together.”
