Ray Harrison Bumgarner, 92, of Howard, Ohio passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, March 30, 2024 at the Grand Strand Medical Center while wintering in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was born on January 15, 1932 in Elizabeth, West Virginia to the late Roy H. and Nellie (Pettit) Bumgarner.
Ray graduated from Wirt County High School in Elizabeth in 1950 where he was the Class President. He furthered his education at West Virginia Tech and earned a degree in printing management in 1954. Ray enlisted in the Army in 1954 and was stationed in Tokyo with the Pacific Stars and Stripes until 1956. On May 26, 1962, Ray married the love of his life, Mary Jane Heft and they spent the next 61 years together, raising a family and traveling.
Ray was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Athens and currently a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. While living in Elizabeth, Ray was a member of the Golden Horseshoe Club and worked at the Wirt County Journal. Ray retired with 32 years from the McBee Systems in Athens.
Ray is survived by his wife, Mary Jane (Heft) Bumgarner; daughter, Heidi Jane (Don) Foos of Mount Vernon and son, David Ray (Tiffany) Bumgarner of Longs, South Carolina; grandchildren, Kai Josef Harrison Bumgarner, Joseph Donald Foos, Meghan Elisabeth Foos, Amanda Jane Foos, and Joseph Nicholson; sister, Sally Ann West of South Charleston, WV, and brother, Robert (Dora Jean) Bumgarner of Marietta.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by an infant brother, George Bumgarner.
The family will receive friends from 1p.m. until the time of a funeral service at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Rd., Mount Vernon. A graveside service will be held at Noon on Saturday, April 6, 2024 in the K of P Cemetery in Elizabeth, WV.
