Joseph Floyd Kent, 82, of Mount Vernon passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, after a long illness. He was born on November 7, 1941 to Mable (Ridenour) Kent Squires in Mansfield, Ohio. Joseph spent the last 60 years married to the love of his life, Barbara (Gump) Kent.

Joseph is survived by his wife; his two children, Lisa (Damain) Hill and Bill (Tonja) Kent; two granddaughters, Chelsey (Brandon) Frost and Kenzie (Philip) Schaffter; three great grandsons, Elijah, Bentlee, and Fletcher; and five step great grandchildren, Rylee, Ashlynn, Ryder, Caroline and Dani. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Mary Lee) Kent and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his mother; his brother, Jon Squires; his sister, Judy (Bob) Gump; and his nephew, Jason Squires.

Joseph served in the Army National Guard before working at General Motors for 35 years, retiring in 2004. Joe was a lifetime member of the AmVets Post 95 and the Moose Lodge 2555. He was a longstanding member of the local pool league.

He loved to go camping, boating, and riding motorcycles. He always had a crossword puzzle close by. He watched Jeopardy and Judge Judy daily. Most importantly though, Joseph loved his time with friends, family and anyone that would listen to his stories. He never knew a stranger, and if he found one, he’d either say “You look familiar” or “Don’t I know you?” He cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren especially when they gave him an excuse to get into trouble himself. Anyone would tell you he was a one of a kind and lit up every room.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024 at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Flowers Chapel, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon where a funeral service will be held at 1p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 with Mr. Roger Marra officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
