FREDERICKTOWN — Two vacant seats in Fredericktown village are expected to be filled at the first meeting of the new year.

The vacant seats were created by an absence on the November ballot.

Council members Raymond P. Brewer and Scott McKnight’s terms end, respectively, on New Year’s Eve — both have since put their names in the ring for the two seats.

McKnight, incorrectly filled out his petition material for the November election, according to the Knox County Board of Elections. McKnight didn’t appeal the board’s decision.

Brewer didn’t file for the November election due to a family illness and hearing other village residents were expected to run for the open seats.

According to village administrator Bruce Snell, four candidates are interested in the open seats.

  • Ray Brewer
  • Scott McKnight
  • Ron Winget
  • Matt Shock

Council can’t appoint someone to the seat until it is vacant, Fredericktown Mayor Jerry Day said. If the council doesn’t appoint somebody within 30 days then the mayor can.

Day said the Council is expected to interview candidates at the Jan. 2 meeting and then take a vote.

“This isn’t the first time this [has] happened here,” he added.
