MOUNT VERNON — Friday at 4 p.m., the 42nd annual Food for the Hungry drive had collected more than $185,000 toward its $260,000 goal.
By midnight, the drive had — once again — surpassed its goal.
The men’s basketball game collection at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the Kenyon Snowflake Gala, both held Friday night, Dec. 8, brought in an additional $77,955.
The total thus far is $263,502.08 and 11 truckloads of food.
That total will continue to grow because the 2023 drive does not end until Dec. 31. There is still time to give or host events on behalf of FFTH.
Exceeding the goal allows FFTH to provide summer grants and special project gifts for food pantries.
FFTH used the exceeded-goal funds from the 2022 drive to provide $25,000 in 2023 summer grants for food pantries to help supplement the free breakfasts and lunches students rely on during the school year.
It also helped a food pantry buy a new trailer to haul food from Mid-Ohio Food Collective and Interchurch Social Services buy a new refrigerator.
