The world lost a force of love and light when Marsha Newton Phillips, 70, of Mount Vernon passed away at her home on Sunday, December 3, 2023. She was born on January 20, 1953 in Mount Vernon, to the late Clarence T. and Ellen Joan (Frey) Newton.
Marsha is survived by her loving husband of over 53 years, Mark Phillips; sons, Shawn Williams Phillips of Mount Vernon, Michael Newton Phillips (Corbin Christensen) of Atlanta, GA and Stephen Newton Phillips (Brande Phillips) of Carroll, OH; grandchildren, Ariel Godley, Trey Phillips, McKenna Phillips and Ava Phillips; and great-grandchildren, Rone, Wren and Rumor Godley, as well as her five brothers, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and their families.
Marsha was a lot of things: a dedicated employee of Knox Community Hospital for over twenty years, a devoted patron St. Vincent de Paul Church and School, where three generations of her family attended, as well as a volunteer for Meals and Wheels.
She was a loyal friend to many, with friendships that lasted over 65 years. As a constant source of encouragement for friends going through a rough time, she knew how to balance wisdom and encouragement with a dash of humor and an unending capacity of empathy and support…and when it was called for, a bit of tough love.
But above everything else, Marsha’s greatest joy in life was being part of a family: a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a mother, a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her devotion to family knew no limits and was embodied in impromptu road trips to visit her great-grandchildren in Indiana, cheering her granddaughters on during sporting events or instinctively knowing the right time to give one of her sons a call and give them the support they didn’t know they needed.
Although her light has been extinguished, her legacy of love, laughter and support will live on in the hearts of those she knew and loved.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023 the Snyder Funeral Homes, Flowers Chapel, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon, Ohio.
