MOUNT VERNON — The melody of ‘Hang On Sloopy’ could be heard throughout the vacant halls of East Elementary Friday morning.

No, it wasn’t being blasted through speakers. It was the Ohio State University’s Alumni Band jamming in the gymnasium.

The alumni band wasn’t alone. East Elementary students, faculty and teachers filled the gym floor eagerly listening to the classics heard nearly every fall Saturday in Columbus at The Shoe.

The undefeated and second-ranked Buckeyes conclude their home schedule on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Minnesota.

Next weekend is the annual clash with Michigan at noon in Ann Arbor with a Big Ten championship game slot on the line.

Students sang and clapped along to the tunes, alongside watching videos of band’s pregame ramp and halftime show.

The alumni band made up of nine bandmates, most of whom played in the OSU band in their college days, traveled through Mount Vernon on Friday, making their first stop at the YMCA.
