Richard L. Segrist
October 27, 1933 – October 17, 2023

Richard “Dick” Segrist, age 89, passed away on October 17, 2023. He was a beloved father, husband, grandfather, teacher, coach and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dick was born on October 27, 1933 in Delta, Ohio, where he spent his formative years. He went on to attend college at Miami University of Ohio and later became a teacher and coach at Fairview Park Schools in Ohio. Throughout his career, he was known for his character, integrity and dedication.

On December 8, 1956, he married Mirriem “Mim” Koppert. They began a family, bringing two daughters into the world: Jami (1958) and Jill (1960). Dick and Mim were happily married for 37 years until her passing in 1994. In 1996, Dick married Sandra Jo Shell and they had 25 years together before her passing in 2021. Dick often commented that he was blessed with two great loves.

Dick’s long career in coaching swimming began with his work in the Red Cross, where he and Mim met. In 1961, Coach Segrist started the Fairview Park High School swimming program, amassing an incredible record: winning multiple titles including the 1964 State Swim Meet, coaching Olympic qualifiers, and receiving many District, State, and National coaching awards. Coach Segrist made a difference in the lives of young men, teaching them the value of hard work and good sportsmanship.

Douglas Lake in northern Michigan was his favorite spot on earth! He hunted and fished there with his Dad and siblings throughout his childhood. After their retirement, Dick & Mim bought the cottage that they had rented for years and he was able to spend his summers soaking in the sunrise from the front porch. An avid golfer, he chose to work at Boyne Golf Resort a few days each week in the summer. One of his happiest experiences was his Hole in One on the Heather course in 2000!

Dick is preceded in death by parents Clifford and Dorothy Segrist, his wife Mirriem Koppert Segrist, second wife Sandra Jo Segrist, sisters Sue (Milton) Hollinger and Jean (Milton) Rearick, and brothers Allen (Donna) Segrist, and William (Carol-living) Segrist and his stepson Russ Shell.

Dick is survived by his daughters, Jami (Robert) Gray, Jill (Thomas) Charlton and his grandchildren, Kristie (Adam), Jason (Allison), Karie (Brian), and Cooper (Courtney) and 10 great-grandchildren; Stepsons Rob Shell and Rick (Joanie) Shell and their family as well as many nieces and nephews in the Segrist and Koppert families.
