MOUNT VERNON — Shelley Coon has decided not to seek re-election for a fourth term as Knox County treasurer. Her current term does not end until Aug. 31, 2025, but the election for the term is in 2024.

“I have enjoyed serving the people of Knox County in my capacity as county treasurer over the last several years, but I feel it is time for a change in the office and for me personally,” Coon said.

Coon said she is proud of the accomplishments made over the last several years, keeping up with technology and working to make it convenient for taxpayers to pay their taxes with many options.

“When I ran for office in 2012, I said I would be a hands-on, working treasurer, and I am proud to say that has always been the case,” Coon said. “I am grateful that I have had this opportunity, and I never took it for granted.”

Coon said she appreciates the support the voters have given her over the years.

Coon has no intention of retiring and is looking at other opportunities which may come her way. She has worked in the treasurer’s office since 2000 and was elected treasurer in 2012 for the term beginning in 2013.

Prior to that, she worked in the county auditor’s office for four years.

Coon has years of experience in county government and how it operates. She said she is open to continuing to work on the county level in another position should something become available.

The filing deadline is Dec. 20, 2023, for all county elected official positions up for re-election in 2024.
