Ruth E. Moffat
Ruth Shafer Moffat
Ruth was born on January 1, 1929, in Canton, Ohio and passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, in Galion, Ohio. She was the loving wife of Malcolm Moffat who preceded her in death in 2019 after 64 years of marriage, reuniting with him one day after what would have been their 68th anniversary.
Ruth graduated from Timken Vocational High School in Canton. She began a long career at Duerr Smith Lane Insurance in Canton while she was a senior in high school. She enjoyed her work and co-workers and made many long-lasting friendships over the nearly 40 years she worked there. Ruth was active in PTA at Greentown Elementary School and Greentown United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She loved to garden, she always had beautiful flowers at her home in Greentown and then North Canton where they lived for many years. Ruth enjoyed sewing, she was an accomplished seamstress who made clothing for herself as well as her children.
Ruth had a quick wit and a sharp tongue, always finding humor even to the end as her health declined. She was a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friend. She was loved by many and will be missed.
Ruth is survived by her two children; Kim Walsh and her husband John of Mt. Gilead, Ohio who provided great care for her as her health declined, and Chris Moffat and his wife Anne of Oriental North Carolina. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Katie Walsh Davis and husband Jeff of Fredericktown, Ohio, Joe Walsh and his wife Melissa of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Patrick Walsh of Fredericktown, Ohio, Cecelia Walsh McGregor and husband Joe of Fredericktown, Ohio, Virginia Wallace and her husband John of Fayetteville, NC, Sarah Moffat of Charlotte, NC, William Edwards and his wife Amanda of Mobile, Alabama and Haydon Moffat and his wife Sara of Chapin, SC. Ruth is also survived by 16 great grandchildren: Andrew and his wife Desiree, Cole, Nicholas, Alex, Alanna, Fiona, Ruthie, Lincoln, Adalynn, Bailey, Joey, Malcolm, Teddy, John, Owen and Annie. She happily embraced her role as “Granny” to each and every one of them. Christmas was never complete for the grandkids until they opened the Christmas ornaments that she would handpick for them throughout the previous year.
Ruth was also preceded in death by her brothers Robert and Richard Shafer.
The family would like to thank the staff at Signature HealthCare in Galion for their care for Ruth.
