MOUNT VERNON — The adult comedy musical “Sister Act” is open at the historic Woodward Opera House from July 8-15.
MTVarts typically hosts their shows at the Knox Memorial Theater, but due to ongoing renovations the summer musical was moved to the Woodward Opera House.
The musical’s plot follows Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses her mobster-gangster boyfriend Curtis murder an informant. Cartier hustles to the police station afterward to inform law enforcement about the murder.
Fearing her own safety, Cartier is put into witness protection and placed in a nun’s house. Cartier transforms the group of musically off-key nun choir into legit singers.
Cartier is played by Shauna Marie, who was in director Bruce Jacklin’s production of “Raisin in the Sun,” he said.
“I know she’s very sought after in Columbus. Very talented. And she decided she would do the show for us. So she came to bat to do the show,” Jacklin said.
Jacklin said that “Sister Act” holds themes of growth, friendship, and love along with comedic notes spread throughout the two acts.
With every summer production MTVarts holds, there’s an orchestral pit filled with seasoned musicians, either music instructors, graduates, or locals from Knox County.
Jacklin also said the 75-person production was challenging, with several scenes, songs, and dance numbers throughout the show.
“The actors have created strong characters, and we have amazing vocalists who are nailing the musical numbers, much to the credit of our music director, Diane Dingler,” Jacklin wrote in his director notes.
Choreography was done by Tony Ingham.
