Dear Editor,

I think we can all agree that we as citizens of Ohio want our voice, our vote to count.

It is what our democracy has been built on and it has worked well in the past. Oh, we may be upset because our side didn’t win; but in general, we accept that the will of the people has prevailed.

On August 8th, a state special election is being held. We will vote on Issue 1 which will raise the number of votes it takes to change the constitution to 60%, rather than the current 50% plus 1 established in 1912. We have also been told that this special election will cost the tax payers over $20 million.

Initially the elected members of the Ohio House and Senate thought this was a flagrant misuse of tax payer funds. But they shifted suddenly and thought the special election was absolutely necessary.

It is clear that the voices of citizens will no longer count for as much if Issue 1 passes. Instead, a minority of 40% will be able to rule against the majority of Ohioans.

This shift by the legislature is bizarre and costly. Vote NO on August 8th to preserve the right of citizens to address important state issues in the future.

Sincerely,

Margaret Dunn

Mount Vernon, Ohio
