To the Editor:
We must say NO to Issue 1 in the August 8 election.
The Ohio legislature is trying to trick us into voting to restrict our rights. They’re using all sorts of lies to make their case, but the bottom line is this: the legislature, along with the governor and secretary of state, simply can’t stand that We The People hold ultimate power in Ohio. And they’re trying to get us to change the rules and get rid of the power we hold.
For 111 years, the Constitution of Ohio has allowed the people to petition to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Just like in every other election, majority rules. If a majority of Ohioans wants the amendment to pass, it passes. If a majority of Ohioans wants the amendment to fail, it fails. It’s basic civics, like we were all taught in school.
Now, our corrupt legislature wants to grab the last bit of power it doesn’t control, both making amendments harder to initiate and requiring 60% instead of a majority vote to pass. They want to give the 40% veto power over the rest of us. And they’re trying to ram through this radical change to our constitution in a last-minute, wasteful, expensive, confusing, low-turnout special August election.
The legislature, governor, and secretary of state think we’re not paying attention. They think we’ll be too busy to vote this summer and will let this attack on our basic civic rights pass. Let’s all get out there on August 8, vote NO on Issue 1, and retain the control that We The People have over our government here in Ohio.
