MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon residents won’t see Bird motorized scooters scattered across the city anymore — or anytime soon.

The decision to not return the rentable scooters after winter was made in early January by Bird representatives, both administrative assistant Todd Hill and Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr said, due to it not making sense for them to come back.

An attempt to reach Bird via email was unsuccessful.

If Bird was interested in returning to Mount Vernon, Starr said the city would follow suit.

Bird, the electric pay-to-ride scooters, arrived in Mount Vernon on May 2021, after a “memorandum of understanding” was agreed upon between the city and Bird.

Starr said he’d call the Bird scooters a success. Starr mentioned people would use the scooters to ride to work or to get groceries.

In May 2021, Starr said the scooters are a “value-added feature” that brings some new money into the area.

Though the city didn’t make any money off the scooters, Hill said, the county received the sales tax generated by riders’ use.
