GAMBIER – The infectious, energetic, toe-tapping sounds of big band swing return to Knox County again this spring, as the Knox Community Jazz Orchestra will offer a spring concert on Friday, May 12, in Rosse Hall on the beautiful campus of Kenyon College.

The concert will be free and will start at 7 p.m.

“We’re maintaining a tradition of giving a springtime performance, but also starting a new tradition by playing in Gambier,” said band lead and Kenyon music professor Ted Buehrer, who founded the jazz orchestra in 2017.

“We enjoy opportunities to play venues that are new to us, and to expand our reach beyond Mount Vernon’s city limits.” The band opened their season with a short performance as part of the Centerburg High School Jazz Festival in April.

The 19-piece orchestra will play a blend of selections they’ve had in their repertoire since they began and some newer music they’ve been working on.

“We’re really excited to unveil some music that is new to us” Buehrer said. Among the new songs the band will perform are a jazz arrangement of ‘Londonderry Air,’ an arrangement of the classic ‘Just Friends’ originally performed by Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, and a beautiful trombone feature called ‘A Very Precious Love,’ ” Buehrer said. “The band has grown together over the last six years, and these new pieces really help us to showcase that growth.”
