MOUNT VERNON — The annual meeting of the Knox County Historical Society will be held on Wednesday evening, April 5th, at the museum, 875 Harcourt Road in Mount Vernon.

All annual and life members of the society are encouraged to attend as the election of new and continuing trustees will be voted upon. Several revisions to the constitution and bylaws will also be considered for adoption.

Following a brief business meeting, an illustrated program on “The Community and the Residents of Greer, Ohio,” will be presented by David Greer, whose family ties date back to the founding of Greersville in 1836.

In addition to these town names, the railroad designated the station depot as “Edlam,” and for two brief periods in 1897 and 1908, the post office name was also changed to “Edlam” before finally officially becoming known as Greer in May 1908.

Mr. Greer presently serves as a trustee and vice president of the historical society, and he has also served for many years as secretary for the Knox County Agriculture Museum. His teaching career includes 16 years as a science instructor at Danville High School as well as several positions in college level instruction and administration in Ohio.

He has also served as a volunteer at Malabar Farm State Park and with many 4-H programs in Knox County. David is widely known for his encyclopedic knowledge about a variety of topics and very much enjoys sharing his interests with others.

The meeting is free and open to the public, and all persons interested in area history are invited to attend. For more information, call the museum at 740-393-5247.

  1. Interesting history – brings back memories of our years at Greer & our association with the Greer family (my late husband was pastor of the Greer Wesleyan (Methodist) Church for 15 years. We acquired a piece of ground from David’s father just outside of Greer & built our retirement home, but later moved to Delaware County.
