Mecca proprietor Pete Mavromates was originally from the Greek island of Cerigo, held in ancient mythology to be the birthplace of the goddess Venus. Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli depicted that event on the shores of the island, known in antiquity as Kythera.Â
