HOWARD — The East Knox Board of Education approved nearly $40,000 in furniture spending for the elementary school addition, expected to be completed in March.
The $39,112.03 for loose furniture will be used for teacher’s desks and other small committees, East Knox Supt. Steve Larcomb said at Thursday’s board of education meeting.
The purchase is being done through state term pricing through the KI State of Ohio. The total cost is to be paid from permanent improvement-elementary additional funds.
In order to be complete by March, Larcomb said there is some flooring and ceilings on the north side of the building that still need to be installed.
Also at the board meeting, director of student services Ben Snedeker gave a presentation about the breakdown of special education students within the district.
The district’s percentage is 15.56% with the state average being 15.34%. The district’s percentage includes students on campus, in alternative placement, residential treatment centers and juvenile detention, Snedeker said.
Snedeker also said the largest single disability category for East Knox is specific learning disability-SLD (this category references the psychological process of language and learning.)
East Knox students don’t have any students identified as:
- Other Health Impaired-Major (OHI-major)
- Deaf-Blindness
- Deafness
- Orthopedic Impairments
- Traumatic Brain Injury
In the elementary building, 77 students identified a need for special education. Seventy students were identified in the Jr./Sr. High School building, which includes the career center, according to Snedeker’s report.
The report also states 30 students were identified out of district, including students open-enrolled to other districts where East Knox is their residential district, students in specialized schools, students in hospitalized residential treatment centers and students in juvenile detention.
Twenty-four preschool students were identified.
