MOUNT VERNON – Judge John Thatcher found 16 defendants guilty after trials, hearings and arraignments this week in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court.

These were the cases brought forward by the Mount Vernon Law Director’s Office.

DEC. 7

Benjamin Harvey, 32, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of 2 counts of Driving Under Suspension and Driving Left of Center. The Court sentenced him to pay a $250 fine on both counts of Driving Under Suspension and a $25 fine for Driving Left of Center.

Terrel Crawford, 34, of Howard, was found guilty of Speeding. The Court sentenced him to pay a $75 fine.

Angela Owens, 44, of Fredericktown, was found guilty of Driving Under Suspension. The Court sentenced her to pay a $250 fine.

Law Director, Rob Broeren represented the State of Ohio in the Harvey and Crawford cases. Assistant Law Director, Brittany Whitney represented the City of Mount Vernon in the Owens case.

DEC. 6

Caitlin Mooney, 31, of Butler, was found guilty of Driving Under an FRA Suspension. The Court sentenced her to pay a $200 fine.

Aaron Riley, 62, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Driving Under an FRA Suspension. The Court sentenced him to pay a $200 fine.

Gretchen Wengerd, 44, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Wrongful Entrustment of a Motor Vehicle. The Court sentenced her to pay a $200 fine.

James Bunch, 36, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Operating a Vehicle Without a Valid Operator’s License and Speeding. The Court sentenced him to pay a $200 fine for the Invalid License charge and a $30 fine for Speeding.

Scott Robinson, 50, of Mount Gilead, was found guilty of Driving Under Suspension. The Court sentenced him to pay a $200 fine.

Luke Stowe, 19, of Centerburg, was found guilty of Speeding. The Court sentenced him to pay a $150 fine.

Shawna Posey, 36, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of two counts of Driving Under an FRA Suspension and Failing to Use a Turn Signal. The Court sentenced her to pay a $100 fine for each DUS charge and a $15 fine for Failing to Use a Turn Signal.

Samuel Hlavin, 23, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Operating a Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol and Use of a Weapon While Intoxicated. The Court sentenced him to pay a $500 fine, serve 180 days in jail, with 175 days suspended, placed him on two years of community control with the following condition: complete a drug and alcohol assessment, and suspended his operator’s license for one year for the OVI charge and to serve five days in jail for the Use of Weapons While Intoxicated charge.

Sherry Hysell, 58, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Failing to Stop After an Accident. The Court sentenced her to serve 180 days in jail, with 160 days suspended, placed her on two years of probation, and suspended her operator’s license for 180 days.

Ila Lester-Garris, 48, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Control. The Court sentenced her to pay a $75 fine and suspended her operator’s license for 180 days for the Reckless Operation charge and a $25 fine for the Failure to Control charge.

Joseph Spearman, 40, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Operating a Vehicle with Dealer Plates. The Court sentenced him to pay a $75 fine.

Zachary Rigby, 32, of Mount Vernon, was found guilty of Domestic Violence AND Aggravated Menacing on Oct. 14, 2022. Today he was sentenced to serve 45 days in jail and was placed on two years of probation.

Assistant Director of Law, Brittany Whitney, represented the State of Ohio in the Rigby case.

Director of Law, Rob Broeren, represented the City of Mount Vernon and the State of Ohio in the remaining cases.

DEC. 5

Justin Dilley, 44, of Atlanta, Georgia, was found guilty of Operating a Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol. The Court sentenced him to pay a $500 fine, serve 180 days in jail, with 177 days suspended, placed him on two years of community control with the following condition: attend and complete a 72-hour driver intervention program, and suspended his operator’s license for one year.

Mason Lyon, 27, of Howard, was found guilty of Domestic Violence. The Court sentenced him to pay a $150 fine, serve 30 days in jail, with all time suspended, and placed him on two years of probation with the following conditions: complete a drug and alcohol assessment and complete the Court’s Hands Down program.

Assistant Director of Law, Brittany Whitney, represented the City of Mount Vernon in the Dilley case and the State of Ohio in the Lyon case.
