DANVILLE — Active Shooter Incidents have occurred for decades; however, the frequency in today’s current climate ASI’s have increased dramatically.

Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue and EMS have taken a proactive role to enhance first responders’ preparedness.

The Knox County EMA along with its collaborating agencies, Danville Police Dept, Easter Knox County Joint Fire District, Mount Vernon Fire Dept., Fredericktown Fire Dept., Knox County Sheriffs Dept., Mount Vernon Police Dept. and trainers from the Ohio Tactical Officers Association conducted RTF training at the local high school recently.

This training allows law enforcement to intergrade emergency medical personnel to enter a structure with an active threat and begin to help those injured while the threat continues.

While employing tactical and command strategies officers can focus on finding the attacker while EMT’s begin to triage, attend to victims, stop the bleed and begin evacuation procedures.

The concept is for first responders to move fast so all the seriously injured can be cared for. The Danville Schools SRO; Rich Miller said; “the paradigm has shifted from the old days of isolate, contain and call SWAT to solo officer responders who are trained to go directly to the threat and engage.”

RTF is planning more trainings throughout Knox County.
