MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City School’s Board of Education accepted bids on two major construction projects during a special September meeting.

Most of Mount Vernon High School’s roof will be replaced due to leakage, Supt. Bill Seder said at Friday’s meeting. The roof has had leaking issues throughout its 35-plus-year lifespan, with it needing to be addressed sooner rather than later.

The project has an estimated cost of $2.435 million and it’s expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, Seder said.  The only piece of the roof that won’t be repaired is a left hexagon fixture due to the costs.

A bid was accepted for the the district’s Student Health Center, located at the industrial arts lab at the high school. The project is paid through a portion of funds from the Ohio Department of Health and ESSER funds.

The total estimate came in at $965,144.38, with zero money coming from the general fund, Treasurer Gary Hankins said.

The expected completion date is March 31, though the date might be too aggressive, Seder said, noting the current climate of the construction market.

Mount Vernon is partnering with Nationwide Children’s Hospital on the health center’s design.

The health center is expected to be operational three to four days a week, Seder said. It depends on how many students need service.  Seder also stressed that community engagement is needed for students and parents to know about this service.
