MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon’s Armed Women of America chapter, a female-centered self-defense group, is recruiting after hearing of interest from Richland County women.

The Mount Vernon chapter is having a meet-and-greet Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Brumby’s Pizzeria and Coffeehouse from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Bellville.

Armed Women of America is a national non-profit organization that brings women around the country together mostly to practice, grow and learn as shooters and in self defense.

There’s 11 chapters across the state, Mount Vernon chapter leader Connie Cline said, with two additional chapters coming soon to southeast and southwest Ohio.

Leaders from the Mount Vernon chapter will be there to provide information and answer questions about how the self-defense group offers training and safety, encouragement and instruction by women for women.

Since the publication of Knox Pages’ article focused on the group, interest has increased from women around the county, Cline said. Interest has come from women not knowing the chapter existed or via husbands recommending the group to their wives.

The thought of making another chapter hasn’t crossed Cline’s mind, but if there’s a large enough interest for Richland County women to start their own chapter then that’s a possibility, Cline added.

“We’ve had many women come to attend, watch and train with us,” Cline said.
