BUTLER TOWNSHIP — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday identified the woman who was shot and killed by a deputy during an exchange of gunfire in Butler Township on Monday night.

Elizabeth A. Delano, 41, was killed during the exchange, Sheriff David Shaffer said in a press release. Shaffer said Delano “had previously lived at the residence, but had not resided there in several weeks.”

The incident – marking Knox County’s second fatal police shooting in a three-day span – occurred Monday evening.

Deputies received a call at 8:31 p.m. about a female who “was attempting to force her way into a residence,” Shaffer said in a press release early Tuesday morning.

The Zuck Road residence is in southeastern Knox County.

The sheriff said arriving officers found the female had entered the house.

“She refused commands to come outside, and at one point, the suspect broke a window and pointed a shotgun toward the officers,” Shaffer said. “The suspect then fired multiple times before a deputy fired a single shot, striking the suspect.”

The woman was transported to Knox Community Hospital, Shaffer said, where she died. Shaffer declined to identify the woman initially because not all family had been notified.

The Danville Police Department and Mount Vernon Police Department assisted Knox County deputies at the scene.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct an independent investigation into the incident, as it does all officer-involved shootings.

This is a developing story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
