Dear Editor,
Our democracy is facing real challenges: restrictions on access to the ballot box, abuse of presidential power, false claims of stolen elections and partisan attempts to overturn valid election results.
One way to keep democracy strong is by insisting that candidates for public office reveal their positions on issues that accomplish that goal.
Common Cause, a national organization that works to strengthen democracy, is trying to hold candidates accountable for their stands on democracy issues. It has sent a questionnaire to candidates nationwide who are running in the November general election.
The questionnaire contains 20 questions on elections, voting, campaign finance and other issues pertinent to having a strong democracy.
The two candidates for Senate in Ohio, Democrat Tim Ryan and Republican J.D. Vance, have not yet filled out the questionnaire, so voters can’t compare them on key issues regarding democracy.
If they do fill out the questionnaire, their answers will be recorded on the Common Cause website, ourdemocracy2022.org.
If you support having safe and accessible voting options, getting big money out of politics, and ending partisan gerrymandering, join me in contacting Vance and Rep. Ryan and urging them to complete the ourdemocracy2022.org questionnaire.
