MOUNT VERNON – “As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.”
That quote by the late British actor Paul Shane Spear describes the search for one-to-one classroom aides at Mount Vernon Middle School.
“We need that special kind of person who can make a difference for students who need a little extra help or attention,” said Principal Rob Gross. “We have dedicated teachers and a wonderful support staff, but our school wouldn’t be as successful without our aides. That’s a flat-out fact.”
While general aides assist teachers in the operation of classrooms, Gross said the greatest need is for adults who understand the positive impact they can have in one-to-one relationships with students.
“One-to-one aides provide attention to life-skill needs of children who function at a different pace,” he said. “They may need an escort to the lunchroom or the restroom or a positive nudge to the attention needed for their academic work.”
Aides, who must have at least a high school diploma, work predominantly a 6.5-hour day and are paid $13 an hour. This year, aides are eligible to qualify for two $500 bonuses and insurance options through the Knox Educational Service Center.
Beyond the pay, Gross emphasized, the in-school experience often is rewarding for aides who go home each day knowing that they have made a real difference.
“Kids bond with their aides. They respect them, trust them.” he said. “That bond makes a total difference in so many ways, including academic achievement.”
William Seder Jr., superintendent of Mount Vernon City Schools, echoed Gross’s remarks, emphasizing that the district respects the important contributions of all employees – teachers, secretaries, bus drivers, cooks and custodial staff.
“Aides directly make a positive impact on students’ lives,” Seder said. “I encourage anyone interested in becoming an aide at any level – elementary, middle school or high school – to apply through the Knox ESC.
“If you are interested in being an aide but can work only four hours a day, let’s have a conversation,” Seder said. “Our goal is to create a climate in every building where all students feel important. We want a positive culture.”

In addition to Mount Vernon, the Knox ESC provides support services for the Centerburg, Clear Fork, Danville, East Knox and Fredericktown school districts, as well as the Knox County Career Center.
