CENTERBURG — Centerburg Local Schools Superintendent Mike Hebenthal has resigned, according to a letter published on the district’s website Friday.

Today will mark his last day with the district, the letter stated, concluding a 20-year career at the school district. Hebenthal served as the middle and high school principal before spending the last 10 years as its superintendent.

Hebenthal resigned July 8 in a letter to the board.

“It has been my absolute honor to be part of the staff of this district,” Hebenthal wrote in his resignation letter, which was obtained by Knox Pages Friday.

“Most employees here work not only with their vast abilities but also with their hearts. They give of themselves over and over and many times suffer emotional scars for it. Most continue to give of themselves for their students over and over. I am honored to have been a part of their hard work.”

Ryan Gallwitz, Centerburg’s high school principal, will take over as the district’s next superintendent, the letter published Friday states. Gallwitz has served as the district’s high school principal for the last 10 years.

“Today, Friday, July 29th, 2022 marks the end of an era. …” Gallwitz wrote in Friday’s letter, referencing Hebenthal’s time with the district. “His leadership, hard work and dedication to our students and community is greatly appreciated. I wish Mike the best of luck and much success in his future endeavors.”

Gallwitz went on to detail additional administrative staffing changes that will take place heading into the 2022-23 school year.

John Morgan, the middle school principal, will now serve as the new high school principal. Alexandrea McIntire, the district’s eighth grade science teacher, will now serve as the new middle school principal. And Stephanie Pound, the district’s student services coordinator, will serve as the new Director of Special Education/Federal Programs.

Miguel Thompson will remain the district’s elementary principal.

Gallwitz encouraged students, families and community members to stop by the district’s open houses in August and “meet the new administrators, even though they are familiar faces.”

“I’m honored and excited to announce that I will be stepping into the superintendent role. …” Gallwitz wrote. “I’m looking forward to a great school year. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or any of the administrators.”

This is a developing story. Knox Pages will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
