MOUNT VERNON — This week brings us a small set of photos sure to strike the memory of many area residents.

The pictures come from the always fascinating Knox Time collection, and they show images from the establishment originally known as Sunset Lanes and Sunset Pool, which was later renamed Deerfield Lanes before it closed.

Sunset-Deerfield Lanes

The business was located on Newark Road, south of Mount Vernon, and was a highly popular hangout.

One poster on the Knox Time page on Facebook said that this grill had “the best greasy burger and crinkle cut fries” in town.

I could not find the exact date of its closing, but I found newspaper references to pool parties and bowling tournaments going back to at least 1961, suggesting a run of several decades.

  1. I remember as a kid in early 90s I would go bowling with my grandmother there! I remember it being called Deerfield lanes… The ball still came back to the ballreturn above ground. I thought it was soo cool! I might still have the paper scorecards somewhere!
