MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Youth Works (KCYW), a summer work program for qualifying young adults ages 14-24, is now accepting applications.
The program runs from May through August. Approval appointments are scheduled through Opportunity Knox. Family income and proof of residency are required. Applications can be picked up at Opportunity Knox, 17604 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon.
Upon approval through Opportunity Knox, orientations will be scheduled for job placement and to complete payroll paperwork.
KCYW is funded through the Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP) which helps low-income young adults ages 14-24 get the training and supports necessary to enter the workforce.
Who runs the program?
In Knox County the program is operated by Opportunity Knox, the Department of Jobs and Family Services, and GOAL Digital Academy.
Who qualifies?
Any Knox County youth between the ages of 14-24 who meet income and housing guidelines. No previous work experience or training is required. Participants MUST be residents of Knox County and MUST meet the requirements set forth by the Department of Job and Family Services.
When does it start and end?
While dates are subject to change, the program will run from mid-May to the end of August. Students will be eligible to work following the end of the school year in the spring to the beginning of the next school year in the fall.
Where would I work and what would I do?
That will depend! Numerous businesses in Knox County partner with KCYW. If you know a business owner that would like to hire you or a business that you would like to work for, contact them and have them reach out to the KCYW staff and, if possible, a placement will be established just for you!
How much do I get paid?
All youth workers will receive $10 per hour. There will be no sick leave or vacation pay. Insurance benefits are not provided, however you will be insured for liability on your work site. If any work placement requires particular gear or clothing (steel-toes boots, uniforms, gloves, etc.) KCYW may be able to purchase these items for you.
What if I can’t get a ride?
We understand that many of our younger participants cannot drive and many parents and guardians are not able to provide transportation due to their own jobs or various other reasons. KCYW will arrange a bus schedule through Knox Area Transit (KAT) and will cover any fees incurred.
