MOUNT VERNON – After nearly three decades in office, Knox County Recorder John Burke Lybarger will retire May 31, 2021. Lybarger, a Republican, was elected in 1992 and took office the following January.

During his tenure, the office has seen many changes including the scanning and digitizing of most of the historical land records.

The county recorder is responsible for the complete, accurate and permanent record of every document pertaining to the conveyance and encumbrance of land within the county. Military discharge records referred to as “DD214” are also kept by the recorder.

The Ohio Revised Code requires each document received to be accurately filed, recorded and indexed. The county recorder also serves on the county’s Records Commission, Data Board, and Microfilm & Imaging Board.

Lybarger has served thousands of people during his seven terms in office.

“I want to thank the public for their support while I was in office. It’s been an honor to serve Knox County,” Lybarger said.

“Public service is a high calling and requires a servant’s attitude,” he added.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, the local Republican Central Committee is tasked with filling the vacancy left by Lybarger.

Anyone interested in becoming the county recorder is asked not to contact the recorder but is encouraged to submit a bio/resume and cover letter to Knox County Republican Party Chairman Thom Collier at KnoxRepublicanChair@gmail.com no later than May 16, 2021.

A screening committee has been formed and will review the candidates before presenting to the full central committee. Any qualified applicant should be prepared to run for the office in upcoming elections.
