GAMBIER – Rosanna Sguerra, a former assistant at Denison University, was hired as head coach of the Kenyon College Ladies volleyball team. The announcement came Friday from Jill McCartney, the College’s Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation.

“We are very fortunate to have Rosanna join our team as head volleyball coach. She brings not only an excellent volleyball background, but also a knowledge of Kenyon and the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC),” McCartney said. “Even more, Rosanna is a truly impressive person who will guide and lead with empathy and passion. I am excited to have her presence in the department and at the College, particularly as we ask our coaches to help our student-athletes navigate these uncertain and difficult times.”

In three seasons as an assistant coach at Denison, a Division III institution and fellow member of the NCAC, Sguerra helped the Big Red to a combined 44 wins, including an 18-8 record last season during which Denison advanced to the conference championship match. She assisted in the development of six All-NCAC honorees, while collaborating with head coach Carter Cassell, a former Kenyon assistant and the 2019 NCAC Coach of the Year.

Prior to her work at Denison, Sguerra served as a graduate assistant coach at Otterbein University, another NCAA Division III institution. In one season there, the Cardinals posted a 16-14 record and made an appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Her coaching resume also covers two years as an assistant at Columbus School for Girls and five years of work at the club level.

A native of Columbus, Sguerra graduated from The Ohio State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. At OSU, she was a four-year member of the women’s volleyball club and served as club president and team captain during her senior season. More recently, she participated in the NCAA Women Coaches Academy and the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar.

Sguerra will begin her work at Kenyon at the start of August.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be the head coach at Kenyon College and I am grateful to Jill McCartney for the work she and the rest of the search committee put in during this process,” Sguerra said. “Getting to know and learn of Jill’s vision, leadership and drive it became clear that Kenyon was a community I wanted to join. I am honored to be chosen to lead the women of the Kenyon volleyball program and I am looking forward to empowering and encouraging them as we together navigate a challenging year in academics and athletics.”
