BLADENSBURG – A longtime funeral home will soon gain new life.
Lasater Funeral Homes sold its Bladensburg location, known as Dilley Lasater Funeral Home, for $40,000 on March 27, according to records from the Knox County auditor’s office. The property, located at 3872 Union St., was purchased by Larry and Shelly Woodruff of New Albany.
Brent Lasater, the owner and funeral director at Lasater Funeral Homes, said the couple plans to renovate the property and turn it into a home. The new owners currently have no plans to build or operate a business out of the property, he said.
The one-and-a-half story Bladensburg residence has served as a funeral home for decades, but Lasater said it’s unclear exactly how long it has operated in that capacity. The home was built in 1920, and Alva Harris opened a funeral home in Bladensburg in 1925, which began Lasater Funeral Homes’ long history in Knox County. But it’s unclear if Harris operated out of the same house that still stands today.
Regardless, Lasater Funeral Homes has enjoyed a long legacy in the Bladensburg community. Pete and Mary Dilley bought the funeral home from the Harris family in 1975 and operated it for 33 years. Brent and Gloria Lasater, longtime associates, bought the home in 2008, along with the company’s Mount Vernon location (212 N. Main St.).
The Lasaters fulfilled a lifelong dream in 2014 by opening their own funeral home, located at 11337 Upper Gilchrist Rd. in Mount Vernon (they sold the North Main Street property in 2015).
While the spacious new facility has been a boon, Lasater said the company has had little use for the Bladensburg home in recent years. The families in that area often ask Lasater to host services at churches instead.
“That’s the way it’s been for the last 20 years…” Lasater said. “That’s just the way the Bladensburg community is. The funeral home was just kind of like an icon that was there for a long, long time.”
Lasater has been looking to sell the funeral home – “you can only have it for so long if you’re not using it,” he said – and he recently found his match. Lasater emphasized that his company will continue to serve the Bladensburg area, despite selling its iconic location.
“We’re still down there in presence,” he said, “we’re just using the churches as our funeral homes.”
