MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon High School boys and girls swim teams competed in the Viking Classic hosted by Northridge High School on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The girls team finished eighth in a field of 24 teams and the boys were 18th among 23 teams.
The top finisher on the girls side was Bre McCluskey in the 50-yard freestyle. McCluskey touched the wall in 27.38-seconds to earn fourth-place. She also competed in the 100-yard freestyle where she finished fifth with a time of 1:00.52.
Maggie Williams also secured a fifth-place finishes in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.29) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.84). Both of these times were unrested season bests for Williams.
McCluskey and Williams joined Skylar Hill and Liz Cline for the 200-yard freestyle relay. The group earned third-place and 32-points for the team with a time of 1:49.43.
The 400-yard freestyle relay, composed of McCluskey, Williams, Hill, and Sandi Brenneman, also earned third-place by touching the wall in 4:08.22.
Hill snuck into the top 10 with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard IM.
Brenneman and Cline both crushed their personal bests in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, respectively. Brenneman touched the wall three seconds faster than her previous time and Cline hit the pad nearly 15 seconds faster than she ever has.
Other notable swims included Julie King and Jordan Schisler in the 50-yard freestyle. Both girls achieved personal bests by more than a second. Schisler also dropped four seconds in the 100-yard freestyle while King dropped six seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.
The top finisher of the day on the boys side was Jacob Lebold in the 500-yard freestyle. Lebold finished 11th with a time of 6:08.54. Lebold was the only boys team member to break into the top-15.
Every member of the boys team achieved at least one in-season or personal best throughout the meet. The largest drop, nearly six seconds, came from Ethan Brooks in the 100-yard breaststroke. Will Laymon also dropped a substantial amount of time – two seconds – in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Yellow Jackets dive into the Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship Meet at Wooster High School on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
