Catherinus Putnam Buckingham, in addition to serving in the Civil War as a Brigadier General, was the builder of the Maplehurst Mansion, which used to sit on East Gambier Street in Mount Vernon. Today the site is occupied by apartments.

General Buckingham was given the unpleasant duty of informing Major General George McClellan (above) that he had been removed from command of the Army of the Potomac by order of President Abraham Lincoln.

During the 2019 living history tour of Mound View Cemetery, Christina and Mike Petee portrayed the Potwins, the second owners of Maplehurst. George B. Potwin was a prominent grocer and businessman in Mount Vernon.
