MOUNT VERNON — One casualty was reported by the Mount Vernon Fire Department in an early Sunday morning blaze at 1575 Yauger Road, according to a press release issued Monday morning.
The fire was contained to the apartment bedroom where one civilian casualty was found, the fire department stated. Other surrounding apartments were evacuated and the residents were assisted by the Red Cross until they were allowed back in their apartments later in the early morning hours.
The Mount Vernon Fire Department reported that it was dispatched to the residence at 12:25 a.m. after a a call was triggered by an odor of smoke. Captain 491 was first on the scene and saw fire inside the apartment window. The MVFD arrived on scene with a command vehicle and two engines. Mutual aid was provided from College Township and Fredericktown EMS.
There were working smoke alarms in the apartment. The State Fire Marshall is working in conjunction with MVFD Investigator Terry Davis to determine the cause of the fire.
