MOUNT VERNON — Local media outlets will join together this weekend for the 37th annual Food For The Hungry drive to benefit The Salvation Army, Interchurch Social Services and 19 other food and poverty assistance initiatives in Knox County.

A live broadcast of the day’s events begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m. on 100.9 FM and 13WMVO Radio, with live video streaming at MVNU.TV. The broadcast will originate from the Knox County Memorial Building at 112 E. High St.

Local media personalities Marcy Rinehart of WNZR and Curtis Newland of WMVO/93.7 The Super Q will host the event. Kokosing River Productions, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Department of Communication, Wayne Bower, J.R. Bonham and Spectrum Cable are donating broadcast production and technical support.

As always, this year’s broadcast will feature community members and organizations presenting their contributions to the drive. FFTH will present $30,500 in mini-grants during the broadcast. Many Knox County elementary, middle, and high school student collection winners will also be recognized.

Featured entertainment includes Rachel Rinehart and Lilly Buckley; The Daniels Family; and a presentation of “The Little Drummer Boy” with Rinehart and Buckley along with the Drum Line from Mount Vernon High School scheduled to broadcast at 12:40 p.m.

At noon the webcast will have short video features on the need and impact of FFTH, the Knox County Career Center Car-B-Q, and a tribute to the Brenneman Family, recipients of this year’s William A. Stroud Award for community service from Kenyon College.

At 1:06 p.m., the Knox County Career Center will offer its partner report followed by the auction of the Car-B-Q Tailgate Trailer. The KCCC’s silent/online auction of themed baskets will continue in the Memorial Building’s Veterans Hall until 3 p.m.; bids can also be placed online at foodforthehungrycares.org.

At 3:05 p.m., MVNU will present the annual Stephen Zelkowitz Memorial Award, which honors service to the FFTH drive. This year’s recipients are Bob and Gwen Tiell and family. Kenyon College will present the exciting results of this year’s Snowflake Gala at 3:45 p.m.

Radio stations providing updates from the Memorial Theater include WNZR 90.9 FM and 93.7 The Super Q. Updates will also be provided on the Food For The Hungry of Knox County Facebook page.

Visitors and donors are encouraged to join this year’s celebration of giving by entering the Memorial Building through the central steps leading to Veteran’s Hall. Handicapped access is available by following the signs provided.

The goal for the 2018 drive is $220,000 and as many non-perishable food items as can be collected. The day’s final total will be announced just before 5 p.m.
