FREDERICKTOWN — Members from the Fredericktown FFA chapter finished eighth in the recent State Ag Soils competition at the Dawe’s Arboretum in Licking County.

This contest consists of two parts, two tests and four pit practicums. Contestants must complete a written knowledge exam and a soil survey evaluation.

The exam tests participants knowledge of soil practices, statistics and history regarding Ohio’s soil, and other soil-related topics. Contestants must also evaluate 4 soil pits in terms of drainage, texture, structure and other key factors. They also take measurements for the slope of the area, the depth of topsoil, and any other necessary information such as drainage and infiltration rates.

Using their evaluations, they then determine what uses each pit would be best for and decide on any management practices that should be exercised, in this case for rural purposes. The Fredericktown FFA Advisor is Mrs. Burden.

Members were: Kyrsten Andrews, Haley Rook, Maribeth Pozderac, and Makayla Scott. The Fredericktown FFA Advisor is Mrs. Burden.
