LOUDONVILLE — The tiny house built by eighth graders at West Holmes Middle School in Millersburg is on its way to a new home.

The specialty house was sold at auction on May 24 to Gary and Mary Coleman, of Loudonville, who had a particular reason behind their purchase – their son who is a cadet at West Point Academy. Mrs. Coleman related that their son wanted to build a tiny house with his father to be used as a moveable residence when he leaves the Academy and begins serving at U.S. Army posts.

While that idea was percolating, the Colemans read a the story about the tiny house being constructed as a middle school project and thought it would fit the bill. Since the interior of the house was unfinished, Gary and his son could still work together on the finishing project.

“This project was not about making money, though we wanted to break even, but it was about getting tools in the hands of younger students and giving them hands-on experiences, said David McMillen, leader for the middle school project and instructor for the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center’s Building Trades program at West Holmes High School. “They are very proud of their accomplishment and this is a very special ending to our project.”
