MOUNT VERNON — The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon honored the top students from Mount Vernon High School and the Knox County Career Center during Thursday night’s Scholastic Recognition Program.

Guest speaker Bonnie Coe, Ph.D., president of Central Ohio Technical College, spoke to the students in attendance and advised them to make good choices, have integrity, seek diversity, and always persevere.

“There is no silver bullet. I have no recipe for you (for success),” Coe said. “But those of you who are being recognized tonight can actually check off the fact that you have indeed had a very successful high school career. Next will come a challenge for a successful college career or military career or career period if you’re going directly into the workforce.”

The students recognized at the awards banquet received $50 scholarships from the Kiwanis Club and the sponsors of each category. Students in seven categories received special recognition for their outstanding achievements. Those were:

Most Dedicated Female: Amanda Miglin

Most Dedicated Male: Sulekh Fernando-Peiris

Best Academic Female: Valerie Stichert

Best Academic Male: Aidan Clarkson

Most Outstanding Knox County Career Center Student : Cassandra Rine

Most Outstanding Female: Mary Harris

Most Outstanding Male: Nicholas Rapp

Sam Barone, past president of the local Kiwanis Club, noted that the junior class has 47 juniors with a GPA of 4.0 or higher and the senior class has 46 students with a 4.0 or higher. The top 10 percent from each class received a certificate for their academic achievement.
