MOUNT VERNON — Companies in Knox County put a lot of hard work into making their places of business a safe area to work and those efforts were recognized Wednesday at the Knox County Safety Council annual awards presentation.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for businesses in the county to get together and be able to share good practices, learn (about) a number of different topics in health and safety, and really share that experience,” said Rob Flowers, chair of the Knox County Safety Council. “The awards are really just a way to recognize all that effort and success that those teams have had over the year.

“It really does reflect the effort that each of these businesses are putting toward health and safety,” Flowers continued. “Not just within the council, but what they’re taking back to their individual businesses and putting in place to protect their employees.”

Businesses could obtain four different awards:

100% Award: This award is presented to companies that have zero injuries or illnesses resulting in a day or more away from work in the previous calendar year.

Group Award: This award is presented to companies that have the lowest incident rate in each group. For this award, the groups are divided by manufacturing with less than 100 employees; manufacturing with more than 100 employees; construction; healthcare; service industries; and government.

Achievement Award: This award is presented to employers that have decreased incident rates by at least 25 percent from the previous year.

Special Award: This award is presented to each company that accumulates at least 500,000 hours and at least six months without a lost-time injury or illness.
