MOUNT VERNON — Fire and Iron Motorcycle club is a national organization of firemen and women, as well as fire-related professionals such as paramedics and dispatchers, who raise money for charity through various activities.
The club was initiated in 1999 in Orange County, Florida. The club now has over 140 chapters, known as stations, across the United States. Each station meets individually as well as attending each other’s charity events.
The central Ohio station of Fire and Iron Station 117, was founded in 2011. The station meets locally in Mount Vernon and hosts many fundraisers at Legends Sports Bar. Some of the fundraisers put on by the organization include a poker run, golf outing and other benefit events for the community.
This year Fire and Iron Station 117 was able to raise and donate $3,750 for the Knox County Special Olympics. The money donated to the Special Olympics helps send more special needs children in Knox County to the Special Olympics each year.
In addition, this year the station was able to raise $1,000 to donate to the Arms of an Angel foundation for a canine for the Mount Vernon Police Department.
With Christmas time upon us, Fire and Iron will support children during the holiday season. Last year, they selected 40 kids from the Salvation Army to purchase for. Each child received not only necessities of coats, hats, gloves and boots, but a couple toys as well. This year Fire and Iron will be putting together 100 Christmas stockings for children at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Each year the fundraising goal is higher, the more charities and community organizations that the station is able to donate to the better. It is through community support that our fundraising events have been so successful. Fire and Iron Station 117 has been able to donate nearly $40,000 over the past few years which all have stayed local.
