MOUNT VERNON – Dozens of tires were discovered and picked up for proper disposal by volunteers at Saturday’s River Rally along the Kokosing downtown Saturday.  The event was organized by Knox County recycling coordinator Randy Canterbury.

In addition to tires, volunteers found carpet remanants, metal, and other trash. Canterbury says the 90 volunteers including boy scouts, MVHS Key Club members, students from MVNU and Kenyon, and county employees found more trash than he was expecting. Some rode in canoes from Riverside Park to the viaduct. The canoes were provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft. Other volunteers walked the river bank from the viaduct to the Mount Vernon Avenue bridge.

“I was hoping that this would create some kind of an awareness for the community to let them know what we found,” said Canterbury.  More river rallies are planned for the future. Canterbury says he has heard from a community group that would like to expand the event to go all the way to Gambier.
