MOUNT VERNON – It was the first home game for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets this season and things looked good in the first half as Mount Vernon kept the Newark Wildcats scoreless until 1:33 left in the first half. The Jackets’ Kaden Daniels scored first on a corner route pass from QB Jaxon Gregory with 4:30 left. The PAT attempt was good making it 7-0 Jackets. Andrew Crane caught a pass for a TD with 1:51 left in Q1 but the extra point attempt by Sam Stanley hit the upright and it was no good.

In the second quarter, Daniels scored again on a Gregory pass. The score was 20-0 Jackets. Daniels sustained an injury to his right leg and was taken off the field later in the 2nd quarter. Daniels did not return for the remainder of the game. Newark scored a TD late in the 2nd quarter. At halftime, the Jackets led 20-7.
It was all Newark the second half as they scored two more TD’s. Several Mount Vernon players were either cramped up or injured throughout the game. In the final minute several penalties resulted in a 4th and 42 for Mount Vernon with the Jackets going for it. An incomplete pass meant Newark took over on downs with just :19 left. Newark ran out the clock. The final score was 21-20.
The Jackets are now 1-1 on the season. Next week they take on the Wooster Generals at home.
